Interfaith Community Worship Service A Tarrant County Interfaith Community Worship Service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at First UMC, Fort Worth. This service, sponsored by Crime Victims Council, MADD, Metropolitan Board of Missions and Tarrant Area Community of Churches, kicks off National Crime Victims’ Rights Week April 22-28. The worship service is intended for crime victims, their families and friends, and anyone in the community interested in helping victims of crime. A forum on family violence, previously announced for April 19, is being rescheduled for a later date. For more details on the worship service and the Crime Victims Council, contact Sandra Lydick, crime victims chaplain, at 817-675-6367. Bishop Ben R. Chamness offers this message: “I appreciate the work and effort of the Crime Victims Council and the Tarrant Area Community of Churches in providing a worship service on April 22, 2007, as part of the National Crime Victims Rights Awareness Week. With the energies of these two organizations and others like them, we can support families and survivors of crime. With the impact violent crimes have on the individuals and communities it affects, it’s important for us to have and use the resources to support and strengthen one another in the journey.” Pastor accepts once-rejected gay man as member The pastor of a Virginia UM church has granted membership to the gay man whose 2005 denial of membership by the previous pastor prompted controversy across the denomination on the issues of homosexuality and pastoral authority. During worship services on March 11 at South Hill (Va.) UMC, Rev. Barry Burkholder accepted the man's transfer of membership from a Baptist church to South Hill (Va.) UMC. The development follows a series of rulings related to the case, including one on pastoral authority, by the denomination's highest court. "The Judicial Council's ruling says that the pastor of the church is the person in authority to determine whether an individual is ready to receive the vows of membership," Burkholder told United Methodist News Service. "And having spoken with this individual and him having professed Christ as his savior, his belief that Jesus Christ died for his sins tells me that he is ready to receive the vows of membership." Rev. Edward H. Johnson had refused to receive the man into membership in 2005, saying the man would neither repent nor seek to live a lifestyle that does not include homosexuality. The man has continued to worship at the South Hill Church and to participate in its music ministry. Meanwhile, Johnson since has been appointed pastor at Dahlgren (Va.) UMC. Like many other Protestant denominations, The UMC has struggled with the issue of homosexuality for more than 30 years. In its Book of Discipline, the church declares the practice to be "incompatible with Christian teaching." But while the church has proscriptions against ordination of "practicing" homosexual clergy and clergy conducting same-sex ceremonies in UM churches, it has no specific law about church membership and homosexual practice. The Virginia case is among several to bring issues related to homosexuality before the denomination's high court. — By Linda Green, United Methodist News Service United Methodists invited to join teleconference on church United Methodists are invited to join in an April 17 town hall meeting to discuss how the church is impacting the world and where the denomination is headed. Titled "Celebrating A Generous Church!" the teleconference will begin at 2 p.m. Central time. It will bring together leaders from several church agencies to discuss findings from a new report, "This is Our Story," produced by the General Council on Finance and Administration. The report offers a statistical look at the church today using data compiled by the council's Analysis and Research Office. The agency leaders also will talk about four "provocative propositions" - leadership development, congregational development, ministry with the poor and global health - around which the church will focus in the next four years. In addition, participants will hear stories about how UM churches are having an impact in the world. The provocative propositions were developed by the general agencies and commissions in support of the UM Council of Bishops' vision pathways. The four proposals represent areas where the boards and agencies will work collaboratively in new ways to focus the church's spiritual and financial resources. The April 17 event will include an interactive question-and-answer session with the audience and panelists. Listeners are encouraged to congregate in small groups to participate in the call, then possibly have their own discussion afterwards. Individuals may also join in the teleconference. Top staff executives from several United Methodist agencies will be participating. In addition to Lackore, they will include: * Rev. Jerome King Del Pino, Board of Higher Education and Ministry; * Rev. R. Randy Day, Board of Global Ministries; * Rev. Karen Greenwaldt, Board of Discipleship; * Rev. Larry Hollon, United Methodist Communications; and * Jim Winkler, Board of Church and Society. To join the teleconference, call toll-free 1-800-868-1846 and enter participant code 63761235. More information is available by contacting Diane Denton, UM Communications, at (615) 742-5406, or Marsha Base, the General Council on Finance and Administration, at (615) 329-3393. Details also are available online at www.umc.org/townhall. The teleconference will be archived at the site.
